I know many who have been waiting for this day for what seems like…an eternity.
My tongue is firmly planted in my cheek, if you couldn’t tell from that side of the Internet. But it’s true. There are many, many people out there, fans of writer Grant Morrison, artist Duncan Fegredo and even publisher, Vertigo Comics, who have been waiting ever so patiently for a beautiful hardcover version of the 1991 comic book three0issue mini series called Kid Eternity.
Count me as one of them.

In 1991, Vertigo Comics was running on all cylinders, blazing the mature, sophisticated, more adult comic book storytelling trail with titles such as John Constantine: Hellblazer, The Sandman and Shade the Changing Man among many others.
Coming out of the critically acclaimed Doom Patrol and Animal Man titles (absolute classics if you haven’t read them!) Scottish writer Grant Morrison looked to turn an obscure pre-World War II superhero on his head. Along with British artist Duncan Fegredo, (who would go on to become a fan-favourite working on titles such as Hellboy), they did just that with the three-issue Kid Eternity miniseries, published monthly in a nicely packaged “prestige format” – a format reserved for more major works of art.
Kid Eternity’s origins lie in the early nineteen forties at Quality Comics. Created by industry legends Otto Binder (famous for his work on the Captain Marvel Family series of comics) and Sheldon Moldoff (who had a long, storied career at DC Comics, specifically Detective Comics, World’s Finest and Blackhawk). In essence, Kid was a nameless boy who was mistakenly killed too early in life. To fix this error, a supernatural entity resurrected him to fight against evil – with the ability to summon any mythological figure to aid him in his battles by uttering the word “eternity”. This allowed him to battle alongside characters such as Jean Valjean.
Weird. And enticing. The character was perfect fodder for Vertigo Comics and Grant Morrison’s fertile imagination.
Morrison and Fegredo turned Kid into an unwitting, supernatural, teenage agent of the Lords of Chaos. Instead of summoning people by uttering the word “eternity” this Kid brought forth demons that take on the personas of the figures that he calls. Of course, the Lords of Chaos have their own nefarious machinations at play.
Kid Eternity is a wonderful series full of demons, death and madness – not to mention the amazing talents of Duncan Fegredo, in his first major North American work, on full display.
